The “man” of the hour

Greetings from Parker, Colorado!

My wife and I are here this week to celebrate our older grandson, as he was gracious enough to schedule two basketball tournaments, his Catholic confirmation and his graduation from 8th grade all in just over a week!

We left Lexington Friday afternoon and drove to the western suburbs of St. Louis.  Had a good night’s sleep there and traveled on Saturday morning to Lawrence, Kansas for tournament number one.  I thought it was rather funny that his team played three other teams…..also from Colorado.  Long way to go to play against teams from your own back yard!

On that trip our grandson was accompanied by his dad (our son in law) and his big sister, who had just finished her freshman year at Colorado State University.  Nice to see everyone, and our player and his dad went with the team for a group dinner event Saturday night, so we took our granddaughter out to dinner and had a wonderful time in a local brewpub with great food and atmosphere in downtown Lawrence.

If you’re not a sports fan, Lawrence is the location of the primary campus of the University of Kansas, a perennial rival of the University of Kentucky basketball program.  No shrinking violet am I, as I proudly wore my UK polo shirt that day.  Only had two people joke with me that my shirt had the letters backwards, since Kansas uses KU as their abbreviation.

Made the long drive from Lawrence to the Denver area Sunday morning and afternoon but our trip was not without its challenge.  We encountered two major rainstorms and a lot of wind, but not so much that we couldn’t continue.  Arrived tired but happy to see our daughter and be at our destination.

Our grandson had to go to school yesterday so everyone else went out for some tasks and came home to grill some delicious carne asada (from Costco, if you’re interested).  More errands today and the confirmation service is tonight, graduation tomorrow evening and then we drive Friday to Omaha for tournament number two with our daughter and the guest of honor with us.

My son in law just told us that the team will play three games on Saturday, spanning about eleven hours.  So that will be quite a day!

If you’re wondering when we’ll return home, we are too!  It’s a good ways from Omaha to Lexington, as we’d travel back through Kansas City, St. Louis and Louisville.  So we’ll drive until we need to stop Sunday after the games wind up.

Despite the long drive, it’s already been a great visit. As it always is!

Hope you have a great remainder of the week!
